AMVETS Riders Post 57 Charter Installation Party

AMVETS Riders Post 57, Harper Woods, MI enjoyed their Charter Install Party Saturday, January 30 at Post 57. The celebration was attended by representatives from National, State and posts throughout Michigan.

The day began with the Invocation from P.D.C. John "Pope" Dowd and the Posting of Colors by Sgt.-At-Arms Steve "Large" Tampa. Dinner was served consisting of Italian Wedding soup, salad, chicken parmesan, veggies and cakes that were out of this world!

The introduction of guests included Bob Downer, Department Commander, who presented to Josh Feltman, Riders Department President, the Riders Department Charter. Josh graciously accepted the charter on behalf of all the state of Michigan Riders.

Remarks also included Victor "Dutch" Stivason, National Riders President who presented AMVETS Riders Post 57's charter. Dutch included a few words on the importance of Riders and their role with our veterans and assisting veterans' families.

Kim "Tin Cups" Judge was in attendance making sure the Riders from the other posts behaved themselves and wanted to make sure they comported themselves like the Riders from Post 57 (ahem...). Well, we all had a good time, actually!

Auxiliary Post 57 President, Janet Hirth, welcomed the Riders into the family and made us feel that we belong from day one. We will make sure that Post 57 will be glad we are there through the work ethic we have and desire to reach out in the communities.

The Commander of Post 57, Pat Murphy, gave a wonderful speech referencing the Riders helping out with an AMVET who passed away last year. There was an escort of Riders that included many bikes going 2 by 2 and a little boy saluted the AMVETS along the way. Mr. Murphy was so touched that the child knew a little about a group (AMVETS) who try to help out as much as they are able to for members and veterans.

P.D.P. Maureen Jackson did a fine job as a Mistress of Ceremony for the day. Everything went very smooth and all guests commented on such a good time for all.

There are many more people who attended and it is hard to name everyone, but many thanks to all who made this day such a special day for us!

PHOTOS COMING SOON!

FORT HOOD VICTIM ESCORTED BY AMVETS RIDERS

On a foggy 40 degree Sunday morning, (Nov 15, 2009), the Amvets Riders, TN Ch 7 of Morristown, made a 45 mile bike ride to receive SPC Fred Greene. Fred, 29, was one of the 13 victims at Ft. Hood.

A 62 mile escort of his body to his hometown of Mountain City was conducted

in conjunction with the Patriot Guard Riders and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. SPC Greene was given full military honors and was treated as a KIA. He was survived by his wife and two young daughters.

The ride wound through the mountains of East Tennessee and as the procession passed small churches, entire congregations lined the roads saluting and holding their hands over their hearts.

The TN Ch 7 Riders were very moved at each and every moment of the ceremonies as they led one of their fallen brothers to his final resting place. May he forever rest in peace.

Alan Sipe, TN Ch 7 President, saluting on the right.

DEPARTMENT OF MISSOURI HOLDS FIRST "RIDERS DAY"

On October 24, 2009, the Department of Missouri had our first Department Riders Day.  The event was hosted by AMVETS Post 48, De Soto, Missouri.  Sponsoring Rider Chapters were Chapter 1, Valley Park, Missouri; Chapter 6, St Louis, Missouri; Chapter 48, De Soto, Missouri; Chapter 98, West Plains, Missouri.  The day was a blast.

From 11 AM TO 5 PM Chapter 1 and 6 sponsored field games I.e. Slow races, wiener bite contest, sucker races; Chapter 98 sponsored a bike show; and Chapter 48 ran the outside concessions.  The overall winner, Chapter 6, won a traveling trophy.  It will be held by their chapter until next year on Riders Day.  The competition should be fierce!

The outside activities were open to the public. Other riders groups and local M/C’s met to get acquainted and have a good time.

At 5 PM the festivities moved inside for the evening starting with a chicken dinner, beer was free.  After dinner we danced and partied to the music of “Facts O Life”.  During breaks announcements were made along with introductions.

During our first break we announced that Chapter 48 raised $10,412 at their October 10, 2009 Camp Hope Poker Run.  A check was presented to Camp Hope, Mike White founder, at that time.  The crowd went nuts with their applause.

During the next break we introduced 2nd Vice President Bruce Mahoney from Amvets Riders National along with Pop, National Riders Liaison, who came for a visit.  Dutch, National Rider President, urged the men to visit Camp Hope and attend the Riders Day.  They both said they had a great time and would report back to Dutch.

Other than having a great time we raised a good sum of money for our Department Riders.  Many said that we should do this again.

Rob Quick, President of the Department of Missouri Riders pledged $1,000 to National for our Camp Hope Cabin project and challenged all other chapters and departments to do the same.

AMVETS Riders Chapter 2298 Escort Camp Hope Riders

The AMVETS Riders Post 2298 partnered with the Veterans Taskforce of Northwest Florida, another veterans' organization, to arrange an escort for the Camp Hope Riders as they came through our area.

On the 29th of October 43 riders met with Frank Estrada and the other Camp Hope Riders at the Florida State Line and escorted them the 80 miles to AMVETS Post 2298 in Callaway, FL. There we had a "meet and greet" and served a free lunch to all who participated.

We also passed the hat for donations and raised an additional $375.00.  The Veterans Taskforce of Northwest Florida donated another $100, so the total we raised for Camp Hope was just short of $1,000. You can see the escort ride at www.camphoperiders.org then going to "links and videos."
